How Hi-Lo Card Counting Works
The Hi-Lo strategy is the most popular card counting system for Blackjack. It assigns a value to each card to determine whether the remaining cards in the deck favor the player or the house (dealer).
- Low Cards (2, 3, 4, 5, 6): Valem +1. Removing them is good for the player.
- Neutral Cards (7, 8, 9): Valem 0. They don't affect the count.
- High Cards (10, J, Q, K, Ace): Valem -1. Removing them is bad for the player.
Running Count vs. True Count
Running Count: It's the sum of all card values that have been played. It's the count you keep mentally.
True Count: It's the running count divided by the number of decks remaining to be played. This is the most important metric, as it gives you a real estimate of your advantage. For example, a running count of +10 is much more powerful when only 1 deck remains than when 5 decks remain.
How to Use the Count for Betting
The True Count tells you when the advantage is in your favor, allowing you to increase your bets.
- True Count of +1 or less: The house has the edge. Make the minimum bet.
- True Count of +2: You have the edge. Increase your bet (e.g., 2x the minimum bet).
- True Count of +3 or more: Your edge is significant. Increase your bet even more (e.g., 3x or 4x the minimum bet).
Remember that card counting doesn't guarantee wins, but it increases your odds in the long run. Play responsibly.
